The Microbiome – Humans Are Not Alone.

The “Inflammation at Interfaces” Cluster of Excellence and the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design opened the exhibit “The Microbiome – Humans Are Not Alone” in Kiel. From now until the end of February 2018, a diverse and completely different view of inflammation research will be shown in the Medizin- und Pharmaziehistorische Sammlung. At the opening on May 18, the science secretary Rolf Fischer visited the exhibit together with Dr. Arne Zerbst (president of the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design) and Professor Stefan Schreiber, the spokesperson of the Cluster of Excellence. The collection opens its doors to the public just in time for International Museum Day on Sunday, May 21. Admission is free on this day.

Trillions of bacteria and other microorganisms on our body make up our microbiome. In order to create successful strategies to treat chronic inflammatory diseases, comprehensive knowledge about the composition and function of this additional “organ” is vital. Communicating this complex research to the population presents an enormous challenge. Here, the students of the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design were acting as a sort of intermediary, translating the complex research contents into an understandable, artistic language.

After visits in the laboratory and in the clinic, where an exchange of content with cluster scientists took place, a total of 18 projects were produced including photographs, comics, paintings, and installations. This is not about a visualization of medical research topics. Instead, the various diseases often affected the students very viscerally and personally; these sentiments were incorporated into their artistic implementation. This is how numerous perspectives – each one unique – on the medical inflammation research on patients originated.
