Great delight in the Cluster of Excellence “Inflammation at Interfaces”

From 2019 onwards, it will continue as the Cluster of Excellence "Precision Medicine in Chronic Inflammation" (PMI)

The research initiative from Schleswig-Holstein has won funding for the third time, amidst tough competition. This success in the German Excellence Strategy is based on the significant and internationally-visible progress achieved in the investigation of chronic inflammatory processes during the two funding periods of its forerunner, the Excellence Initiative. The causes of chronic inflammatory diseases have been revealed.

The newly-approved Cluster of Excellence PMI will put these scientific advances into practice for patients with chronic inflammatory diseases, by enabling faster diagnoses and the planning of personalised treatment. In order for this transfer from molecular to clinical medicine to succeed, the new PMI Cluster will especially support the careers of researching clinicians.  To do so, a nationally-groundbreaking new programme is being launched for training young clinical researchers, together with the medical faculties, the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein and the Ärztekammer Schleswig-Holstein medical association.

The Microbiome – Mankind Is Not Alone.

Trillions of bacteria and other microorganisms on our body make up our microbiome. In order to create successful strategies to treat chronic inflammatory diseases, comprehensive knowledge about this additional “organ” is vital. Communicating this complex research to the population presents an enormous challenge. The students of the Muthesius University of Fine Arts and Design were here acting as a sort of intermediary, translating the complex research contents into an understandable, artistic language. Numerous aspects of the medical inflammatory research on patients, each unique, were created in the form of paintings, comics, installations, and movies.

Exhibit open: May 21, 2017–February 28, 2019

Location: Medizin- und Pharmaziehistorische Sammlung der Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel

Excellent Science for new Therapies

Chronic inflammmation, triggered by dysfunctions on the boundary surfaces of the body’s organs and their interaction with the environment, represents a central challenge for modern medicine. It is considered to be the cause of many chronic diseases, which have been steadily increasing in recent decades – especially in western industrialized countries.

The goal of the Cluster of Excellence in Inflammation Research is to decode the molecular basis of chronic inflammatory diseases, as well as the complete identification of metabolic and signaling pathways as an approach to therapies and prevention.

The unforeseen complexity and the breadth of possible triggers of inflammatory diseases require new scientific structures and practices. In the Excellence Cluster, key elements of the origins of inflammation will be examined in detail on genetic, genomic and functional levels.

The cluster is a joint venture of Kiel University and the University of Lübeck, together with the Schleswig-Holstein University Medical Center, the Leibniz Research Center Borstel, the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Biology, Plön, and the Muthesius Academy of Fine Arts and Design in Kiel.
