2017 Diabetes Research Prize for Diabetologist from Kiel

29.05.2017

Professor Matthias Laudes, a scientist from the Faculty of Medicine at Kiel University, member of the “Inflammation at Interfaces” Cluster of Excellence and senior physician at the I. Department of Internal Medicine at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH), was awarded the 2017 Ferdinand Bertram prize. Laudes received the scientific prize endowed with €20,000 from the Deutsche Diabetes Gesellschaft (DDG, German diabetes association) for his work on the correlation between metabolism and inflammation. The prize was presented to him at this year’s diabetes conference of the DDG in Hamburg on Thursday, May 26.

“Chronic inflammatory processes play a significant role in the development of civilization’s modern diseases, such as type 2 diabetes and atherosclerosis,” says Laudes. He is therefore developing new innovative strategies in order to prevent metabolic diseases using anti-inflammatory measures in the “Inflammation at Interfaces” Cluster of Excellence. The Ferdinand Bertram prize is the oldest and most prestigious scientific prize awarded by the Deutsche Diabetes Gesellschaft. In the 54-year history of the prize, Laudes is the first clinical diabetologist from the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein to receive the award.

The 44-year-old specialist in internal medicine was appointed to Kiel University in 2011. Since then, he has also headed the clinical nutrition and metabolic medicine division at the I. Department of Internal Medicine at the University Medical Center Schleswig-Holstein. As recognition for his research achievements, he has already been awarded in the past year with one of eight “Schleswig-Holstein Excellence Chairs.” With these special professorships, each endowed with approximately €1 million over a period of six years, Kiel University and the University of Lübeck are supporting excellent scientists in inflammation research.
